“Go and make disciples of all nations.” Jesus said.
“Growing spiritually, practicing community and serving selflessly,” is what we aim to achieve here at First Lutheran Church.
We aim to be and make Disciples of Jesus Christ. How we do that is through worship, community groups and service both inside and outside our walls. We desire everyone to be in a community group!
What is a community group? Sermon based small groups are at the heart of our community groups. A small number of other groups that focus on a special topic are also a community group.
A community group consists of 6-14 people who meet weekly to share, study and support one another either on campus on a Wednesday night, or off campus in a home based group.
How can I get into a community group? Community Groups will run in three sessions of seven to eleven weeks. Two weeks before the session starts, a sign up drive will be in the commons where you can sign up for a group. Also, our Community
Group Coordinator, Linsey Petersen, can help you navigate the groups. Many groups are “stage in life” groups where you might share a common interest or lifestyle.
What do I need to bring each session? First, you will listen to the week's sermon. Then, birng a community group study guide that you will find in each week's bulletin, your homework, your Bible, and yourself! Sometimes you might bring treats.
When do they meet? We have a variety of groups meeting both on campus and in home based groups. Check them out in the commons on sign up day.
What if I want to start my own community group? That’s what we need! We need people to start a “stub” group ofabout four to five people and then other people can sign up to be in it. Consider opening up your home and starting a group!
You talk about worship and service. What else is required of me? Nothing else is “required” of you, but we consider the three values; worship, community groups and service our three components in building disciples.
We ask that you: come to worship on Sundays, get into a community group, wherever you feel fits you best, and serve outside yourself! You can sign up for service with your community group and go volunteer at one of our partners in ministry sometime during the current trimester.
What do I get out of this? We pray that people will find a group where real life happens. People crave having a place to belong. Community groups are a great way to “do life together,” and grow spiritually, create community and serve selflessly!
