Week 10: Reading the Bible
Sunday, 09 August 2009
Series:
Nehemiah Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Steve Turnbull
Passages:
Nehemiah 7:73b-8:3, 7-8, 13-17
Description:
How confident are you in reading the Bible? In today’s message we’ll explore how the Bible is useful in our lives and how we can read it realistically and with joy. The Bible wasn’t given to us to test our memories and teach us to love ancient history. The Bible has been given to us to teach us about the love of God in Jesus Christ and to shape our lives according to His purposes. When we read the Bible that way together with one another, we too will read it with real joy and power.
Week 9: Doing God's Work
Sunday, 02 August 2009
Series:
Nehemiah Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Steve Turnbull
Passages:
Nehemiah 6:10-16; 7:1-2
Description:
Setbacks. Hurdles. Opposition. Most of us face these kinds of things every day, usually more often than we'd like. Sometimes we handle them with confidence. But sometimes they can stop us in our tracks, frighten us, and turn us back. In today's message we'll explore Nehemiah's confidence and learn to enjoy a similar sense of peace and purpose. And as disciples of Jesus, we'll learn that success in God's work comes not only in times of obvious blessing and success but sometimes right in the midst of the fiercest difficulty.
Week 8: Rumor vs. Christian
Sunday, 26 July 2009
Series:
Nehemiah Summer Series
Speaker:
Angie Way
Passages:
Nehemiah 6:1-9
Description:
I think we’ve all been there. Something was said about you or your family that isn’t true, or at least isn’t the full story! Nehemiah is dealing with that situation in our text today. His enemies are trying to discredit him by circulating rumors that his intentions are less than honorable. How does he respond? He directly confronts those accusing him with the truth, and then he asks God to strengthen him. When it is rumor vs. Christian, there is a time to confront rumor with truth, but then it must be left in His hands.
Week 7: The Jubilee Heart
Sunday, 19 July 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Angie Way
Passages:
Nehemiah 5:14-19
Description:
Through his work, Nehemiah was awarded the title of ‘Governor.’ In that role, he could expect certain privileges. But Nehemiah knew the authority he was given was not for himself, but to allow him to further God’s purposes for the many. He had a Jubilee Heart– a heart that reflected God’s restoring love for the people! What would it look like for us to live out of His ‘Jubilee Heart’? How will we hold to our stuff? How will we see what it’s for? What will we invest our lives in? Our temporary personal dreams? Or in God’s dream for all?
Week 6: Wouldn’t It Be Better?
Sunday, 12 July 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Steve Turnbull
Passages:
Nehemiah 5:1-13
Description:
Today’s Bible reading comes from the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. It’s the story of some ancient Jews who had to borrow money just to survive and the other Jews who were lending them the cash. But this isn’t just a story of need and greed. It’s about way more than economics. It’s a story about our imaginations and what we really want in life. It’s a story about our relationship with God and our relationships with one another. It’s a story that dares us to imagine living life God’s way and simply to ask, “Wouldn’t that be better?”
Week 5: Walls of Opportunity
Sunday, 05 July 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Carl Buettemeier
Description:
As we look at the world today, including the city in which we live, we can see where important bricks have been torn out of the walls. The church as well can lose bricks of theological truth and healthy tradition, one by one, till suddenly the wall of security is in danger of falling. Let Jesus’ words to Jerusalem apply to our lives, that we may recognize the time of God’s coming.
Week 4: Side by Side
Sunday, 28 June 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Angie Way
Passages:
Nehemiah 3:1-3:32
Description:
Today we are part of an even greater work! Because Jesus has chosen to walk side by side with broken people like us by his death and resurrection, our hands, our hearts, our lives become part of the building of a new kingdom! Side by side in Him, He calls us to worship, serve, and grow! Jesus is building restored hearts and lives as He draws us together in Him!
Week 3: Why Isn't God's Will Being Done?
Sunday, 21 June 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Steve Turnbull
Passages:
Nehemiah 2:10-18
Description:
Why is good difficult? Why do people sometimes oppose what seems like such an obviously good thing? In Jesus, God has begun to rebuild not just a particular city but his entire creation. When we grasp that hope in Christ, it has the power to reorient our hearts and lives so that we too turn away for the obstacles and the apathy that oppose God's rebuilding and fill us instead with a passion to see His will be done.
Week 2: Ask the King
Sunday, 14 June 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Angie Way
Passages:
Nehemiah 2:1-9
Description:
Our King Jesus often asks this same question, “What is it you want?” As we look at our lives, do we know the answer to his question? What sparks your deepest grief in this season of your life? What is in need of restoration in your life? Start with the first step: ask the King! Bring your concerns to Jesus. Let Him show you His will to bring restoration to you, and through you!!
Week 1: Broken Hearts
Sunday, 07 June 2009
Series:
Nehemiah-Summer Series
Speaker:
Pastor Steve Turnbull
Passages:
Nehemiah 1:1-4
Description:
On the first Sunday of our summer season, we begin reading about the life and work of Nehemiah. Nehemiah lived a comfortable life in the service of the Persian king. He was happy and safe until he heard the bad news that his homeland was still in ruins. And then Nehemiah was broken down. He was crushed. In today’s readings and message, we’ll see how Nehemiah receives this news and learn from him how to respond to things that break us down now.
