Lent 2010 - Profile of a Disciple
Lent is a 40 day season of the church designed to help us remember and experience the road to the Cross that Jesus walked for us. We are prepared to receive the Good News of the Resurrection by first remembering that our God chose to walk with us in the brokenness of this world—which we know all too well! In Lent, we experience the call to follow after Jesus from wherever we are… and because of who Jesus is, we can trust he will meet us where we are to lead us on this journey!
Lent is traditionally a time when we as Christians examine our personal and corporate spiritual practices and rededicate ourselves in devotion to the Lord. Through the centuries, Christians have found there are certain spiritual practices that seem beneficial in helping a relationship with God to deepen and mature. Some of these practices are: confession, prayer, meditation on Scripture, silence to listen to God, fasting from food or other distractions, or ‘giving up’ something for the 40 days of Lent. Often, people will choose to intentionally focus in on one of these spiritual disciplines through these 40 days, out of love for the Lord in honor of Jesus’ sacrifice.
The practicing of these disciplines place us in humility before God and remind us of our need for a Savior. When we remember this truth, Good Friday takes on a deeper meaning for us personally: we experience that Jesus’ love and sacrifice is for us. This introspective journey ultimately prepares us to experience Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter for all that it really means—not just for Jesus, but for us! This Lenten journey places us in the larger story of what God has done and is doing for us through Jesus Christ.
To that end, this year our Lenten series will focus on Profiles of Discipleship—real people, both from the Bible and from today who have known and have been changed by Jesus. On Sundays, the Biblical follower of Jesus will be held up a an example of a particular discipleship characteristic and on Wednesday, will be portrayed as the living, breathing disciple who helps us know that same Jesus is at work in our lives today and encourages us in our own journey as disciples.
