“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

WHAT IS WORSHIP? Print E-mail
Worship is our response – both personal and corporate – to God for Who He is and what He has done, expressed in and by the things we say and the way we live.

"But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray." Luke 5:16

"With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord; And in the midst of many I will praise Him." Psalm 109:30

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

“You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.” Revelation 4:11

The Wesminster Shorter Catechism simply states:
Question: What is the chief end of man?
Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.

As we understand that our role as Believers is to glorify God through worship - we should seek to understand Biblical forms of worship. In everyday life these postures of worship should be used when we recognize His goodness, feel the worth of it and ascribe to Him praise.

Biblical Forms of Worship

Standing: They will stand in awe of the God of Israel. Isaiah 29:23.

Singing: I will be glad and exalt in You; I will sing praise to Your name, 0 Most High. Psalm 9:2.

Shouting: My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; and my soul, which You have redeemed. Psalm 71:23.

Sitting: Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, "Who am I, 0 Lord God..." 2 Samuel 7:18.

Clapping: 0 clap your hands, all peoples; shout to God with the voice of joy. Psalm 47:1.

Bowing: Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship. Exodus 34:8.

Praying: In the morning, 0 Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch. Psalm 5:3.

Laying Prostrate: And Jesus went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed... Matthew 26: 39.

Dancing: Let them praise His name with dancing. Psalm 149:3

Worship In Spirit and in Truth

Much of the worship in our generation has moved from worshiping in truth to mostly worshiping with outward actions. Our worship to God corporately and personally must have a heart and a head – worshippers who worship in spirit and truth.

We must heed the warning we get from Malachi 1:10 “Oh that there were one among you who would shut the gates, that you might not light useless fires on my altar!" A modern translation might read, “I wish you would put your hands down, get off your knees, shut your mouths and think about what you're telling Me or asking of Me.”

God should be glorified both with our minds and our hearts. We desire to be a church who love deeply sound doctrine and who are equally deeply emotional.

But the time is coming - indeed it’s here now - when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. John 4:23

Living A Life Of Worship - Without Music

We often only think about worship as singing "songs, hymns and spiritual songs" to God on Sunday mornings - but here are 10 ways of living a life of worship - without music.
